Man-to-Man Offense & Defense

Basketball Hall of Fame coach Morgan Wootten of DeMatha High School has developed a two-part instruction DVD illustrating man-to-man offenses and fastbreak, as well as man-to-man pressure defense. In the man-to-man offense and fastbreak section, Coach Wootten demonstrates motion offense and flex; formation offense such 2-3 and 1-2-2. These plays are broken down into progression drills. The fastbreak portion of the sessions is also broken down. In all of Coach Wootten's illustrations, his demonstrators wear numbered jerseys 1 through 5 so it is easy to follow players motions.

The DVD is set up so you can view the entire lesson or go directly to specific "chapter selections" for review of that particular section of the eleven individual lesson plans. The second section illustrates excellent techniques and tactics in the development of effective man-to-man pressure defense. By breaking down the fundamentals of footwork and positioning in relation to individual man-to-man defense, Coach Wootten provides clear illustrations on how to handle screens, pressure and traps, as well as half and full court defensive pressure. His progression defense drills will assist any coach in the understanding and teaching of these techniques to their teams. As with the first portion of the DVD, you can choose to view the entire program or the seven individual lessons.

The 90-minute DVD is recommended as an excellent teaching tool as it incorporates on-court instruction and demonstration, drills and computer-generated animation.

Winning essentials for players and coaches

This book is beneficial for any coach and for players in high school or beyond. I thoroughly enjoyed the section on the Performance Rating (PR) System. The PR system is an objective way to evaluate players in games and practices. Coaches can use the PR system to determine playing time. The book also touches on physical training, offensive and defensive skills and situational tactics. I would highly recommend this book.

This video demonstrates a method of coaching basketball in reverse order of traditional instruction. It focuses on playing the game first followed by learning the tactics and skill instruction - reason being that young players get bored quickly and want the opportunity to compete to test their abilities.

Personal experience in games (3 on 3, 4 on 4, half and full court) help the player realize that improvement of fundamental skills will allow the player to enjoy the game more. A guided discovery method involving player and coach is utilized to assist in skill and tactic improvement. Sample modified games are demonstrated.
