The Mini Class of 2001 - Learn to Train (L2T) Camp will take place on April 26-27th at the UNB Currie Center. This inaugural event will bring together 40 boys and 40 girls from mini (U12)teams around the province and will offer skill devleopment, classroom sessions and competition components over the two days.

Congratulations to Ron Hooper and Peter Cameron on their inductions into the NB Sports Hall of Fame.

Hailing from Petitcodiac, Ronald Hooper has spent over 50 years volunteering as a coach, administrator and official in basketball. He coached the Petitcodiac Panthers High School Senior Boys Basketball team to over 1200 wins.

Since 1986, Peter Cameron is the president of the Moncton Wheelchair Sport Association and has coached its basketball team to 3 consecutive Maritime Championships. As a player, he excelled at basketball and tennis.

Online registration for the BNB Elite Development Program (EDP) is now available - CLICK HERE.

New this year, the program offers training for both senior (1997-1998) and junior (1999-2000) age groups in five different regions around the province. Tryouts will start up the week of April 1st with varying days/times in each region. Tryouts dates will be posted on the BNB web site as soon as they are available.
Selected athletes will take part in eight training sessions in their own regions with a final centralized competition day on Sunday, May 5th.

Provincial Team Tryouts (16U, 15U, 15U Development) - May 11-12 at the UNB Currie Center.  Assessments from EDP regional training and competition day will play a key roll in athlete selection.

Bantam Elite Camp - The Junior EDP competition day (May 5) will be used to select players for the Bantam Elite Camp which will take place July 8-12th in Fredericton.
NEW this year, 12 girls and 12 boys will be selected from the bantam elite camp for the 14U Team NB team which will play at the BNB Summerfest tournament on July 19-21 in Saint John.

The March Podium Performance Series, resented by the Canadian Sport Centre Atlantic and Coach NB, will be “An Introduction to Para Sport for Coaches, Athletes, and Administrators” on Tuesday, March 19^th at 7:00pm in room 3-22 of the Richard J. Currie Centre on the UNB campus.

The Atlantic Coaches Conference will be held April 26th/27th at the Bella Rosa Arts Centre at Halifax West High school. This professional development conference will deliver 25 sessions focused on assisting coaches from provincial team to professional level with resources to better support their athletes. BNB is pleased to announce that NBA Shooting Consultant Dave Love will be returning to New Brunswick for two days of clinics for young basketball players on March 8-9th, 2013. 

Coach Love has worked for the Phoenix Suns, Oklahoma City Thunder and Tulsa66ers (NBA D-League), as well as being the UofC Shooting Coach for eight years.  He is regarded as one of the top shooting coaches in North America and has been running clinics across Canada for 10 years.  This is an opportunity for young players age 11+ to learn from one of the best!

Long-time basketball coach Ron Hooper will receive the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his significant contributions to sports in Petitcodiac. He coached many sports during his career as a Physical Education teacher and Guidance Counsellor at PetitcodiacRegional Schoolbut is best known as the head coach of the Petitcodiac Panthers boys basketball team over the past 55+ years. This year Coach Hooper guided two teams: the high school varsity boys and the middle school boys, recognizing the need to maintain a constant stream of developing talent.

Basketball New Brunswick continues its mission to ensure grassroots programs are a key part of its development and growth moving forward.

 With that in mind, BNB is preparing to host its first jamboree for mini-aged players (2000-2001) from across the province to play on the big stage that is the Richard J. Currie Center on the campus of the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton.

BNB is pleased to once again be offering the Elite Development Program (EDP) in the spring of 2013.  New this year there will be junior (1999-2000) and senior (1997-1998) training groups in 5 regions around the province. The program will begin after Easter and conclude with a centralized Competition Day on May 5th.

The Junior EDP will be used as a key identifier for the Bantam Elite Camp which takes place July 8-12, while the Senior EDP will be used to help identify players for the 16U, 15U and 15U Development provincial team programs with final tryouts taking place on May 11-12th.

BNB is putting out a call for managers for the2013 Canada Summer Games.  The 17U Men's and Women's teams will be travelling with Team NB to Sherbrooke, Quebec in August.  The boys will compete during week 1 of the games from August 2-10th, while the girls will compete during week 2, August 11-18th.

The Canada Games managers will be responsible for the adminstrative aspects of each team, and may also contribute during practices and games depending on experience.  They will also be the main liaison with the Team NB Mission Staff.

It is with great sadness that BNB has lost one of their Honourary Life Members this week.  Gord Lebel passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, November 20th. 
Gord previously served many years for BNB as technical director, board member, player and coach and was then named an honourary life member for all of his contributions to the organization.

As the Basketball New Brunswick season moves into full swing for the 2012-13 season, it is imperative that coaches or team managers report scores from all games played this season.

The consistency of reporting scores at all levels of play allows BNB to have a better grasp on provincial tournament designations. It also allows other teams to perhaps schedule games against teams of similar skill levels based on seeing results.

Simply go to the Provincial Championship banner on the BNB home page, scroll down and find the Game Results – Score Reporting tab and follow the directions.

The Fredericton-based Northside Minor Basketball Association’s midget girls’ program will host tryouts Tuesday, Oct. 30 and Thursday, Nov. 1, at Leo Hayes High School at 7:30 p.m. on both nights.

The tryouts are open to girls born in 1997 and 1998 who are not playing with a New Brunswick Interscholastic Athletic Association school team in 2012-13.

It is expected there will be at least four midget-level teams in the province this season. The NMBA is also anticipating hosting a midget tournament Nov. 24 and 25 in Fredericton.

The Fundy Recreation Professionals Association Invites you to a community panel discussion on brain injuries in sport. Friday Oct 19th 2012 from 6:30 to 7:30 pm at the Qplex, Quispamsis NB. This event is open to the public, to register please contact (506) 848-5900.

The objective of this discussion is to raise awareness of sport related concussions and provide an opportunity for parents, coaches, athletes, recreation coordinators, physical education teachers, and sport administrators to engage with a panel of experts to learn about the prevention, treatment and recovery of brain injuries in all sports.

Building on ParticipACTION’s third annual Sports Day in Canada, Canada Basketball has declared September 29, 2012 as Basketball Coaches Day in Canada.

To celebrate, BNB and UNB have teamed up to run a coaching clinic for FREE during the ACCREON Helen Campbell women's and Eric Garland men's basketball tournaments at the UNB Currie Center on the weekend of September 28-30th.

The clinic will take place from 9am-1:15pm at the SOUTH GYM on Saturday, September 29th, 2012.  The coaches presenting will include Jeff Speedy and Brent Baker from UNB, along with Scott Edwards from the University of Alberta and Steve Konchalski from St. Francis Xavier University.

As an added bonus for NB basketball coaches, all participants will receive a free day pass for the Saturday games to the UNB tournament.

BNB minor associations and teams have traditionally been classified as “AAA”, “AA” and “A” based on criteria such as the size of the minor association, the geographic area, the number of athletes participating, the number of schools in the area, etc. Each year more and more teams are requesting to move either up or down from their assigned division for a variety of reasons. At the 2012 provincials, 18 teams at the mini and bantam levels played outside of those assigned divisions.

After meaningful discussion, it was approved by the BNB Board of Directors to move from the “AAA”, “AA”, “A” divisions at the mini and bantam levels, and “Small School” and “Large School” at the middle school levels to “Division 1, 2, 3….” (depending on the number of registered teams).

The BNB insurance policy for 2012-13 comes into effect on September 1, 2012. Players, coaches, executive, etc are NOT covered by this insurance until they have registered as a member of BNB for the 2012-13 season.

Exception - To assist Minor associations with the large volume of participants they must register, Associations are able to register their organization by paying the Association fee and submitting an Executive list. 

This will permit their participants to be insured under their umbrella while they are finalizing member lists. Member lists MUST be in by November 30, 2012, as any participants whose names are not recorded in the office after that date will no longer be insured, until their membership registration is received.

The World Masters Games are taking place in Torino, Italy from August 2-11, 2013.  A Canadian team is looking for women between the age 50-55 who have university experience and are interested in playing.  Please contact Charlene at jjbolen@sasktel.net if interested.

In conjunction with the 17U & 15U Women's National Basketball Championships, BNB will be hosting a women's coaches school for female and male coaches who coach female basketball. 

The 2-day school will take place on August 6-7th at UNB and will be facilitated by Michele Belanger, head coach of the University of Toronto Varsity Blues Women's Basketball Team, along with other CIS coaches as session presenters.

BNB is currently seeking for volunteers for the 17U & 15U Women's National Championships taking place in Fredericton, NB from August 5th-12th, 2012.  We are looking for assistance with ticket sales, mechandise sales, hospitality rooms, practice monitor, minor officials, and more!

BNB and UNBSJ have once again partnered to run a summer basketball camp for mini aged players born in 2000, 2001 and 2002.  The camp will take place at the UNBSJ Fieldhouse from July 23-27th. The lead coach will be BNB Provincial Team coach Doug Deering.  The cost of the camp is $180, which include a t-shirt and a basketball.  Click here for more info and to register.

The Bayside Middle School Broncos are hosting a tournament for girls teams on July 14-15th - cost per team is $200.  Interested teams should contact Jason Peters at jason.peters@gnb.ca

The Fredericton-based Northside Minor Basketball Association is seeking coaches for a number of its proposed 2012-13 programs.  The NMBA has openings at the boys’ and girls’ mini, bantam and midget A and B programs.  All coaches must have at least a National Coaching Certification Program Level I designation.  The NMBA has a three-member coaching committee that reviews all applications.

The second Canada Games ID Session will take place on Sunday, May 27th at Fredericton High School for all players born in 1996 and 1997.  Following this session a training group of athletes will be selected to move forward. The cost of the session is $20.

Erik Nissen, of Quispamsis, NB, has been selected to represent our province at the Men's National Cadet Tryout for the second year in a row.  Nissen played for the NBIAA Final 12 runner-up Kennebecasis Valley High School Crusaders, is a member of the BNB Elite Development Program and was recently selected for the BNB 17U Provincial Team.

The East Saint John Minor Basketball Association will be hosting their Annual General Meeting on Saturday, June 2nd at 7pm in the Simonds High School auditorium.

The meeting is open to all members and it is a great opportunity for those that are interested on what goes on "behind the scenes" at ESJMBA.  Reports from each Division Head are given, as well reports by the Treasurer, RefereeCoordinator, and Chairperson.  
ESJMBA is seeking nominations for Chairperson, Vice-President and Treasurer.

The BNB U15/15D Provincial Team Showcase Tryouts are taking place this coming weekend, May 12-13th, at the UNB Currie Center.
Registration will be from 1145-145pm in the 4th floor lobby of the building. Please arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your first game time. The cost of the Showcase Tryout is $55.

BNB is pleased to announce that Grace Wade, of Moncton, NB, has been selected to attend the Canada Basketball National Cadette (U17) ID Camp on March 23-25th in Toronto, Ontario. PRESS RELEASE.

Grace Wade - receiving financial support from Deannette Turner, Development Committee Chair of the Moncton Kiwanis Minor Basketball Association, to help cover travel expenses.

As coaches and officials should be aware, BNB implemented additional rule modifications in December 2010 for the Middle School, Bantam, Mini, Jr Mini and Puppy levels.

BNB is offering an NCCP Introduction to Competition (ITC) coaching clinic January 28-29 at KVHS.  The ITC course includes both theory and technical instruction.  All middle school and age-class (mini, bantam, midget, juvenile) teams attending the BNB Provincial Championships must have
at least one coach on their bench with a minimum Level 1 certification or has completed the ITC course.

Registration for the 2012 BNB Provincial Championships will be available soon!  We are currently upgrading our system to allow for smoother registrations and online payments. 

The information you will require for each player on your team will be name, address and birthdate and you will no longer be required to print and submit a paper copy of your registration.  As a result, HOSTING APPLICATIONS will no longer be attached to your registration and will need to be submitted seperately.  They can be found under the Provincial Championship tab by clicking on "Resources" or by clicking here.

We appreciate your patience while we prepare the new registration system and will post a notice once it is completed.

BNB will be offering two Introduction to Competition courses in January.  The ITC course includes both theory and technical instruction and is the minimum requirement for at least one coach on every bench at the BNB Provincial Championships.

The first course will take place in Fredericton on January 21-22 and in Saint John the following weekend, January 28-29.

The opportunity for the formation of a midget basketball program at the Basketball New Brunswick club level is now underway across the province.
Although some BNB associations offer midget recreational programs, there is not a widespread club program offered like the mini and bantam levels. Several organizers want to see this change.

 “There can be some areas and pockets of the province that don’t have a midget program and we’re losing many of those players who simply don’t have a place to play,” said Brad Janes, president of the Fredericton-based Northside Minor Basketball Association. “If we lose those children who don’t make a high school or Tier II team in their area, we may not get them back and they’ll move on. Many of us feel there should be a natural progression from mini to bantam and then on to midget and even juvenile if the numbers are there. It’s a big chance for BNB to have programs in place to keep children playing.”

 There is activity with the NMBA, Fredericton YCBC, Moncton and Sackville attempting to establish midget programs that would run from December through March. Moncton already has two female midget recreation teams and four midget boys’ recreation teams.

 “Like anything that is new, it can take some time, but a number of people are committed to make this happen and we hope it reaches fruition,” said Janes. “Even if there’s three associations or four involved at the start, it can grow. We’re not anticipating dozens of teams. We simply want to create a program that is functional and provides opportunity for those players to play. That’s the bottom line.”

All teams attending the BNB Provincial Championships must have at least one coach on their bench who is fully Level 1 certified under the old system or has taken the ITC course.
This 2-day course includes both theory and technical components. Cost is $125.

Basketball New Brunswick is now accepting applications for the 2013 Canada Games male and female head coach positions.  Each position is a 2-year commitment for the 17U age group starting in December 2011 through to the Canada Games in August 2013. The Don Grant Classic will take place at the Moncton Coliseum on October 21-23, 2011. The event will also include a FREE coaching clinic on Thursday, October 20th at the Coliseum put on by the MKMBA featuring UNB women's head coach Jeff Speedy and the new NBL Moncton Miracles head coach Norris Bell.  The clinic will be from 730-9pm.

At their recent AGM, Canada Basketball adopted a National Membership Program (NMP) which all Provincial and Territorial basketball Associations across the country have agreed to support.  As a result, the BNB membership fees will increase starting in September, 2011.  Please refer to our membership page for more information -  click here.

Basketball New Brunswick is please to announce they have been selected to host the 2012 15U & 17U Girls National Championships.  The event will take place from August 5-12, 2012 at the Richard J. Currie Center on the UNB Fredericton campus.

This is a tremendous opportunity for BNB, UNB and the City of Fredericton to showcase our province and host the top 15 and 17 year old female basketball players from across the country. UNB has a strong recent history of hosting successful CIS National Championships in basketball, volleyball and hockey and the addition of the Currie Center makes for a very attractive venue.

BNB previously hosted the girls event at the UNB Aitkin Centre in 2002 with the BNB U15 girls team capturing the silver medal.

The 2012 boys event will take place in Sherbrooke, Quebec and be used as a test event in preparation for the 2013 Canada Games.
